My Process

Below are a few systems I use with creators. It's not the whole process, but it gives some insight into how I think.

Step 01

Strategy before production

Goal: use data to support the creator’s vision and find the best version of the video.

  • Strategy checks
    • What’s the creator’s vision?
    • What does the data show?
    • What expectation does the content create?
  • Packaging

How do the title, thumbnail, and first frame deliver on that expectation while building curiosity?

Step 02

Video experience

Goal: deliver on what's expected, create memorable content, and improve viewer satisfaction.

  • Interest

Does the intro confirm the promise, give the viewer the context they need, and make the reason to keep watching clear?

  • Engagement

Does each segment, scene, and shot keep progressing without unnecessary repetition, confusion, or distraction?

  • Viewer satisfaction

Does the video deliver on the expectation it created, then surpass it enough that the viewer wants to watch another one?

Step 03

Team system

Goal: turn decisions into usable systems.

  • Creative direction

Do the dialogue, visuals, pacing, location, props, sound, and structure support the overall concept?

  • Team handoff

Training, workflows, and documentation so the whole team can improve and make stronger creative decisions.

  • Post analysis

Analyzing videos for lessons that can be implemented into future ideas, edits, workflows, and creative systems.

Step 04

Data is a tool, not a cage

Data can show what's working, where viewers lose interest, and which ideas have demand. But the goal isn't to turn every video into a formula.

The best creative systems protect the human parts too: the instinct, jokes, reactions, weird ideas, and unexpected moments that make a video feel alive.

FAQs

Do you only focus on retention?

No. Retention is important, but it's only one aspect in the larger creative process. When I'm helping creators, I'm looking at the full creator and viewer experience.

Do you help with ideas before filming?

Yes. Most of my time is spent helping before filming, but I also analyze content after it's posted and bring those learnings back into pre-production.

Do you work on Shorts, Long-form, or both?

I help creators with both Shorts and Long-form. I've even helped with smaller creative decisions that can help creators grow, like using community posts.

Do you work with the creator or the whole team?

Both. I usually work inside the team's existing process with ideation, thumbnails, scriptwriting, and editing, so the direction stays consistent from idea to final upload.

What makes the work different from normal consulting?

My work is different from normal consulting because it's about merging findings grounded in research, specific performance patterns, and specific insights on a creator's own content without turning every video into an exact formula. The goal is to make decisions easier while protecting personality and the moments that make content memorable.
